What’s it like to learn with AWC?
Each year, thousands of students just like you achieve their writing goals through our courses and world-class presenters. Here they share how their new-found skills and confidence enriched their life.
I found Mark to be a very knowledgeable, honest and encouraging tutor. His feedback was clear and detailed and provided me with a good insight into what I was doing well and what I could improve on.
The assignments each week felt like real-world tasks that I will get as a copywriter in the future, so I felt like it was really preparing me for what lies ahead.
It's given me the confidence I needed to say 'I'm a writer' and to go out and start looking for clients.
I'd probably say the first assignment and the feedback I got was the 'aha...see Richard, you can write!' moment where my confidence lifted.
AWC courses are well worth doing. Engaging lessons, real-world weekly assignments that help you get used to writing to deadlines.
I loved Vivienne's expertise and insights on op-ed writing. I learnt quite a lot over the four weeks. I also very much appreciated Vivienne's feedback to the weekly assignments.
It's helped me to write concisely and to the point, that's for sure. Loved the zooming in/out aspect of opinion writing from module 3, which was probably the module I got the most take aways from.
I gained so much insight from opinion writing and from our tutor Vivienne Pearson. I loved hearing about her own experiences in her own published pieces as well as the other writers she interviewed for the different modules.
I very much appreciated that Vivienne took the time to provide valuable feedback to students to improve their own writing and really encourage us to submit letters to the editor and our own op-ed pieces.
The length of the course was just right! Thoroughly enjoyed the learning experience. I've now got the confidence to submit an op-ed piece.
Do it! This is the second course I've taken from AWC and I highly recommend taking a course that you're genuinely interested in and apply in your own career/profession. You'll enjoy it more.
Judith was so enthusiastic and encouraging. She never made you feel like you couldn't do a task and really pushed everyone to do their best work. Really fantastic teacher!!
I enjoyed the creative feedback everyone gave each other. It felt extremely supportive and encouraging.
I am keen to look at my favourite books and see what makes them work so well. Judith reading out aloud to us really helped me understand what elements go into a successful picture book.
I had finished my first novel draft and knew it needed work but wasn't sure where to start. This course has given me new skills to deal with this with more confidence and direction.
Petronella was very positive in her feedback and it was good to listen to everyone's feedback, as suggested, to pick up some pointers.
The assignments set were very helpful and it was fun to submit and read everyone else's writing.
I needed direction in characterisation and structure and I got this from this course. I've had my structure concerns confirmed and it's given me direction and I've realised that my character flaws are actually a voice issue, rather than a backstory issue. The few tips I've received on this has helped me immensely.
This short course has given me tools and inspiration to keep going with my writing journey. That it will make me a better writer.
Thank you AWC - I believe I will be back to do another course!
It was inclusive, challenging and fun. A whole lot of things came together to make sense.
Judith explained everything simply and succinctly. Her knowledge, experience and love for writing and illustrating were infectious. Her feedback was kind and on point, she covered all the topics and left plenty of time for questions.
I enjoyed everything! Seriously, it was a wonderful weekend - excellent presenter, lovely students, fantastic content and a fabulous venue. Learnt a lot and made friends.
I have a way forward and some great structural tools. Very exciting!
Do it! In my experience, the content is great, the presenters are fabulous and the handouts are super useful. These guys know what they're doing.
A great course. Highly recommended.
Petronella gave insightful advice and was balanced in her feedback between positive and constructive comments.
I enjoyed being able to put into practice what I'd learnt that week and get personalised feedback on my writing from a published author.
It has helped me really think about the character and their motivations, thinking about how they would speak / think / act in a situation (not necessarily how I would speak / think / act!)
Amazing course that teaches you the writing fundamentals to become a better author. A good balance between theory and practice.
As with any course I have done my initial hope is to get one really good 'take away' learning to make it worthwhile. This course exceeded my expectations, delivering half a dozen new ideas/resources/approaches that I hadn't come across previously.
Engaging presentation, clear and helpful downloads, concise and helpful content.
I'm always interested in learning something new. I enjoy seeing the world and have travelled quite a bit and wanted to see if travel writing could appeal to me as a freelancer.
I enjoyed dissecting actual published articles to learn the best way to structure an article. I enjoy reading about destinations, both local and overseas.
I believe I could write travel articles in the future.
I think AWC courses are a good way to learn different types of writing and find out what suits you.
My experience lies mainly in writing novels and when I started writing a short story for a local comp, I realised that I had no idea how to write a short story. This course came into my in-box, so I thought, "Why not?"
I enjoyed the way it was structured with a mix of easy (and personable) audio lessons and hand-outs.
I now feel confident to write more short stories off my own bat.
I've always loved experiencing new places, and I've always loved writing. We've started to travel again recently (now the kids are grown), and we have plans to do lots of caravanning and possibly overseas travel very soon. I have also had a few profile pieces published, and received great feedback on those, so I want to have a go at writing travel articles and getting paid for them.
I liked the real practical information given, e.g. on photos, contacting editors, who to approach for interviews etc.
It was great to hear Katrina tell her stories about the different articles she's written, and to hear her tips, tricks and practical aspects of the job.
I now have a plan to follow to get started; ideas for articles and hooks are blossoming in my head, and I believe more fully that I can do this!
If you are serious about becoming a travel writer, do this course! If you are kind-of interested in becoming a travel writer, do the course anyway because it will turn your spark into a fire.
Excellent course material. I learned a great deal about audiobooks production and distribution. Jam-packed information in every module and loved Sarah's delivery of it - clarity of voice and recap in the final session.
I enjoyed all the useful websites and opinion on each one from Sarah who obviously has a wealth of knowledge in the subject.
Highly recommended to anyone who is looking to publish their book and open another source of revenue through audiobooks.
I have learnt so much that I didn't even know I didn't know. Thank you!
I have been so unsure and full of self-doubt when I write. I finally have the basic understanding. I have needed this so much, even for activities outside of writing. I am not uneducated. In fact I have a bachelor's degree in science, but I have always found the rules of grammar to be so ambiguous. I need a set formula when it comes to grammar, and I think this course has really tried to provide just that. For so long, I have been trying to write this one flashback scene in my story. I just haven't known how to do it, but now I do! Thank you! I REALLY needed this!!
The tutor was wonderfully encouraging! Really appreciated Victoria's support and advice along the way!
The course was inspiring, encouraging and brilliant. The lectures made the information digestible. The handouts were incredibly useful. The assignments were so well designed to get students going in a really practical and useful way. Having the tutor support was wonderful too as it was really encouraging to have feedback on the assignments. I really loved the course - it's made me excited and confident to keep going.
It's really solidified for me that this is the pathway I want to take in life. It's really confirmed for me how much I love writing.
The delicious feeling of flow that I felt while writing each assignment felt like an 'aha!' for me. I felt focused, calm, quiet and immersed in my creative process and this was very affirming. So thank you so much!
Thanks enormously for all of the care taken to make this so enjoyable, encouraging and effective.
It's a phenomenal resource to develop your writing! Do yourself a favour.
I have now learnt how to properly structure a short story and look forward to using these skills to enter into competitions in the near future.
Go for it!
There was excellent content and I like the fact that the material is available for 12 months.
Louisa was wonderful and her feedback was extremely pertinent and insightful.
The Australian Writers' Centre offers focused and well researched courses across a very broad spectrum of writing related topics.
Candice Fox presented a wealth of information in an accessible and interesting way.
There was so much information that I feel I need to listen to all the modules again to take it in. But I think from a writing sense, what helped most was the way Candice encouraged viewing everything from the murder to the court case to jail from multiple points of view.
I do recommend AWC courses whenever writers ask about useful courses. I say the information is well researched and presented professionally in ways that can be applied to your writing.
I enjoyed the discussion of just how many facets there were to consider in worldbuilding. I now have a really good jumping-off point for writing a fictionalised family history.
No matter what kind of story you want to write, there is a course available that can help you do that well.
I liked the format of being online, but with some structure. The 5-week timeframe was appropriate for me to manage.
Alex gave timely and helpful feedback. She was knowledgeable about the industry.
I liked doing the assignments, and then reflecting on them after I had received feedback. Good learning process and I think I am reading and writing more consciously now.
I wasn't expecting it but reviewing other's writing was a huge bonus and I learnt a lot about my own writing and how I could write better.
Louisa was great. She gave important feedback in a positive way that enabled me to take it on board better and understand how I could improve what I was writing. Louisa was very approachable and was inclusive, encouraging us all to listen to the feedback she gave on other people's writing which helped me pick up on how I could improve myself.
It got me writing in a way that started to emulate published authors - I developed a greater understanding of the different parts of a story.
I discovered I head hopped. I didn't even know what head hopping was but through the feedback session and the tutorial I figured out what I was doing wrong. Then I started seeing the same thing in my colleagues' writing, in the course. It wasn't till then did I start to figure out how I could change my writing practice and stick to one character's POV per chapter.
If you seriously want to start writing and find out if it is for you, doing one or more courses is important. I described it recently as "going back to primary school for writers." Through AWC I am learning the basics of writing that is hard to decipher just by reading books.
The feedback from my tutor for my assignment helped me to greatly improve my writing in many ways and boosted my confidence.
An amazing course if you are passionate about writing picture books, lots of resources and examples and very flexible course.
