The world of food writing is actually very similar to the art of making the dishes themselves – both involve discipline, creativity and plenty of flavour. And just like the globe’s finest chefs, if you want to be the best, you’ll need a few secret ingredients and a strong technique.
That’s where the Australian Writers’ Centre can help. You see, writing about food is one thing, but turning it into a paid pursuit is all about knowing how to chop, dice, mix and blend your way to communication that crackles and sentences that sizzle.
During this Online Live course, you’ll learn how to translate a meal or a recipe into an equally delicious paragraph. Your reader can’t be there with you in the kitchen or the restaurant, but your job is to make them feel as though they are. And when you’re done with the creating, we will show you how to plate up your articles to catch the eye of editors and readers alike.
Your instructor is experienced freelance food writer Carli Ratcliff, whose writing has long appeared in newspapers, magazines, food guides and websites including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Australian Financial Review, BBC Good Food, Vogue Living and Monocle. With Carli’s guidance, you’ll get a feel for the industry and how to tickle its tastebuds.
And so MUCH more!
By the end of the course, you’ll be looking at food in a whole new light. Your new-found confidence could land you glossy gigs reviewing at the likes of Gourmet Traveller, Good Food or Delicious. Or it could make your blog or Insta feed the hottest food content in town, whisking you away to destinations near and far! (They might even make a movie about you starring Meryl Streep, but we can’t make any guarantees.) Writing for love and writing for money – just like an eggplant and an aubergine, there is no difference.
In this unique course, you will spend five evenings with freelance food writer Carli Ratcliff.
Carli will equip you with practical skills to combine your love of food, cooking and writing into a paid pursuit.
With our Online Live courses, you participate online from the comfort of your own home in a live Zoom video-based classroom. Carli and your classmates are right there with you in real time as you learn the essential elements of Food Writing.
“I now have great direction on what I need to do next! This course gives insider information and exposure to the food world.”
– Angela Palermo
Want to know where all the cool kids hang out? The Graduates’ Club of course! Now, calm down – there are no cigars, leather armchairs or loud ticking grandfather clocks here. But it IS exclusive invitation only (on completion of a course) and it’s free! Meet other writers online and share successes, seek help or just get something off your chest. Many students believe this ‘legacy learning’ is one of the most valuable things about our AWC community, and who are we to argue? So if you want to receive feedback, support and a heads-up on opportunities … join the Club!
