What’s it like to learn with AWC?
Each year, thousands of students just like you achieve their writing goals through our courses and world-class presenters. Here they share how their new-found skills and confidence enriched their life.
The course really helped me. It clarified several ideas and how to develop them. I am planning a series - it helped me define which path to take and how to develop it.
The self-pacing is great as it makes completing the modules so easy. There is a lot of really good information. I felt involved rather than just a listener.
All the courses I have done with AWC have helped my writing enormously. Can't recommend them highly enough and they are worth the money.
Bernadette was extremely engaging, informative and authentic. I loved her personal stories that related to the topic and very conversational manner.
As an introduction, I feel it was great and we covered a lot of content (and examples) that were relevant to my industry which is creative, media and marketing.
It has brought back the joy I had in writing. Now equipped with a toolbox of formulas and insights, I am more conscious of the power of words when used in the right way.
My colleague has already enrolled upon recommendation. I mentioned it was great course that will help with her confidence in writing.
Big thank you to Bernadette for reigniting my writing passion by taking out the fear factor. There is no right or wrong way in telling a story as long as the content is relevant and authentic.
Bernadette is a wonderful presenter/tutor and provides great resources and explanations along the way. Feedback is also helpful. I came to understand that SEO is a real 'writing science' - and the tools taught really help the student to better understand this writing style/science.
I enjoyed:
1. The quality of the material and resources provided in the course.
2. Bernadette's extensive knowledge and understanding of the SEO arena.
3. The pace of the course - 5 weeks is an ideal amount of time to work through and grasp the information and then to provide time to respond to the information being taught via the assignments set by Bernadette/online presenter.
Bernadette's very useful handouts and assignment templates helped me to make better sense of the concepts being taught. More specifically, Bernadette's examples clearly demonstrated to the student what was required and how to go about getting to that assignment end point.
AWC delivers fun, interesting and engaging writing courses that are suited to any writer no matter where they may be on their writing journey: beginner or advanced.
Keep up the great content and courses, AWC!
This course gave my writing direction and focus and helped a lot with giving my characters a voice.
Excellent feedback from Cathie as well as good ideas about which books I can buy to assist me in my writing. I really appreciated Cathie's individual attention to my work.
I started the course with some random chapters; I now have a main character with a strong voice and a direction for a novel.
If you're thinking of writing a novel you need to take this course so you don't waste time waffling about without focus.
Suzanne made everyone feel supported and her feedback always included what was effective in the writing.
I enjoyed everything - lectures, assignments, and handouts and feedback worked together. The focus on writing for YA was very helpful and specific to this audience.
A good way to develop skills and knowledge - gives you deadlines and helpful feedback.
Pamela was professional, concise, and approachable. Her feedback was very valuable. She found areas for improvement and those that were working well in my submissions. I also gained great insights by listening to the feedback on the other course participants' submissions.
The course has consolidated the basics of writing good fiction for me. It has also potentially changed my focus from continuing with a novel I had already started and am 10,000 words into, to starting a new project based on a 500-word scene written at the end of the course.
It is an easily accessible way to learn about writing in a friendly environment.
I wanted to get a solid start on my novel, hoping it would steer the rest of it in the right direction.
At first, I was nervous about presenting large pieces of my writing to others for open critique, but everyone is all in the same boat and just wants to work together to improve their writing.
I really appreciated Cathie's wealth of knowledge and her specific feedback. It's great to work with someone with such experience and know-how in the industry.
The course has helped me to refine the synopsis, and target areas of writing such as deep point of view. It has helped me to keep writing and work on the story plan. I am motivated to continue and finish.
Well organised. Excellent pacing. Information and feedback was detailed and relevant. I especially appreciate that students have access to the course for 12 months because I certainly couldn't absorb everything in 5 weeks.
The tutor was knowledgeable and perceptive, picked up on details I would not have considered and suggested useful ways to think about them, and improve my writing.
I actually began writing the story I have wanted to for a long time! I already had the main characters and setting in mind, based on stories from my family history. But I was limiting my thinking too much because I already know those characters well. The course seems to have given me permission to 'depart' from what I know and be more imaginative in how I develop those characters.
No matter how long you've been writing, or how much you think you know about writing, you'll learn something new and be a better writer for this course!
Just a thank you to all involved.
Vivienne was lovely and helpful with the feedback she gave. Most of the time, even if it wasn't 100% positive, it was 100% accurate and what I needed to hear. It was great having someone with experience in the industry giving pointers and offering suggestions I would not have thought about.
It has opened my eyes to the world of freelance and encouraged me that it is possible to make the career change.
AWC courses are well presented and have a wealth of knowledge, even for people who are not wanting to pursue it as a career.
I've been receiving AWC newsletters for a while now. I wanted to do this course as a chance to develop and get some feedback on my creative writing and to start to build a network of writers as well.
Finding the time to do it justice was the biggest concern - but the biggest hesitation was just finding the confidence to share my writing. So glad I did though!
Pamela was fantastic - so knowledgeable about the craft of writing but also just in general with the feedback given to the class. I loved her focus on the positive aspects of the assignments and the constructive advice given for improvement.
I loved completing the assignments and receiving feedback on them. It was enjoyable to play with the different scenarios and POVs and come away with some ideas to build into longer stories.
It's given me the confidence to go away and write some more and showed me that I can find the time to do it too!
The AWC provides a really supportive environment for aspiring writers. Creative Writing Stage 1 is a great starting point and really helps break down how writing works. Receiving feedback on course assignments is so valuable - I'd highly recommend AWC courses based on my experience.
Keep doing what you're doing. It's fantastic!
One of my favourite things to do in the world is reading and writing. I have loved books for a long time and love creating my own world. I have needed some help though and this seemed like the perfect course for it.
I had no hesitations. I believed that it would be perfect and it has been!
My tutor was very good, providing helpful feedback, both negative and positive, and it was very helpful. Thank you for the excellent help.
I enjoyed the part where I got to work on my story, like making my characters, their feelings, appearances, and the world around them.
It has helped me start a story for the first time which I am confident with. I always struggled with starting stories.
I would say that it is a very good course that can help your writing skills improve and can give you personal feedback that is unbiased, because it is not from family or friends.
It was perfect. Thank you.
The tutor was fantastic - Pamela's feedback was very helpful and interesting. I am very grateful for the gentle encouragement to try the workshopping process, which I was anxious about but have found incredibly useful. Thank you.
I have done a university stage one writing paper in the past and, although it was interesting, it wasn't very helpful. I am a pragmatic learner, so found it didn't seem to translate well to the specifics of how to write better. This made me unsure about trying another course, but I'm so glad I did as the AWC course was fantastic and I have learnt so many real practical useful strategies.
The course has made me see how important every single word and space is, and helped me understand the difference between simple storytelling and writing well. It has also given me hope that I can learn to write well and even given me hope that getting published one day may be possible.
If you want to learn the practical tools and strategies of both telling a story and writing it well, do this course.
Thank you :-)
My overall impression of the tutor was that it was all constructive feedback and had the extra push of where I could improve my story and where I'm doing really well. Whereas getting that feedback from friends or family didn't help at all.
I hesitated at first because I was worried about another writer being mean about my work. But everyone in my course was so nice.
I have a better understanding of how to start and structure a story. This course helped me so much in gaining those foundational skills that I wasn't taught at school.
I would say that this course is amazing for first-time writers or any writer that wants to relearn the foundations of story writing.
I have decided to write a creative non-fiction book about my path to becoming an author.
The content was useful but also engaging and entertaining. My major learning was the importance of making sure everything is factual whilst ensuring that it is not just a list of facts and dates.
I have done several courses with the Australian Writers' Centre which have proven invaluable to achieving my goal to become a published author. These courses helped me to keep going through the often difficult stages of writing my first full manuscript when I thought I might give up. Now I am almost ready to self-publish my first historical fiction novel. I would never have made it this far without the Australian Writers' Centre.
The course was really good! It was concise, interesting and very useful. Lots of small valuable lessons that add up.
My first children's book will be coming out later this year and I want to be prepared for doing school visits and author talks. The timing of the course was brilliant.
I enjoyed the practical advice and Nat's generosity in sharing specific games and activities we can use for kids of all ages. She is an enthusiastic and generous presenter and gives us all something to aspire to.
I now have confidence that the author presentation I've had in the back of mind will work but also that there are other options if I need them, plus games and quick ways to pivot if things go wrong.
A thoughtful, practical course that provides you all you need to know about presenting to kids and makes it slightly less terrifying.
Loved all the costume changes, Nat!
I was blown away by the detail and the information embedded in each module. Loved the tables for planning aspects like setting and characters.
It validated my desire to research broadly and deeply.
I was so impressed by Carli. Her knowledge and experience really shone throughout the course, and she made all of us feel so comfortable and respected. She would actually be one of the best tutors I've had, alongside Bernadette.
I really enjoyed Carli's passion, knowledge and her unwavering engagement with all of us. She genuinely listened to each of us when we explained what our current roles were and what we hoped to achieve from the course and referred back to all of us individually throughout the session. She really is a fantastic and charismatic tutor.
The AWC is a very professionally run organisation with exceptional tutors - definitely worth the time and money.
Great content. Very relevant material and extremely knowledgeable presenter.
Carli's experience in the field was why I was so keen to undertake this UX writing training. She was fabulous! Carli is the holy grail for all things UX Writing - no wonder she is in such high-demand.
The AWC continues to deliver relevant, market-ready short writing courses that provide its students with brilliant job-ready writing tools.
Keep up the great work, AWC!
This course has given me a solid foundation for understanding the ever-evolving world of UX writing.
Carli was great - inclusive, approachable, knowledgeable, and encouraging. Plus, she knows her stuff and gave us lots of real examples, and talked through them clearly.
I enjoyed being able to apply the things I learned today to my own business website. I have a whole new perspective of how my website content could - SHOULD - be written!
The AWC is always a great choice for personal and professional development if you love writing of any kind!
