What’s it like to learn with AWC?
Each year, thousands of students just like you achieve their writing goals through our courses and world-class presenters. Here they share how their new-found skills and confidence enriched their life.
I had an idea for a middle grade novel, which I started writing. Not having written a novel before, I felt that this course would be very helpful in getting my first draft started.
It made me stick to a writing schedule. I felt motivated and I enjoyed the workshopping. The tutor was very knowledgeable and more than happy to provide extra feedback when requested.
Worth every cent! I am now determined to continue writing my middle grade novel.
WOW. Just WOW.
The course has provided confidence and targeted instructions that address necessary details. I enjoyed the abundance of learning material supplied.
You won't be disappointed - AWC is professional, knowledgeable and willing to share SO MUCH information.
Cathie was excellent. She offered detailed feedback and explained the reasons for her comments, which has helped me learn to write better.
The workshopping and the tutor feedback were invaluable. Gives me yet more impetus to keep writing with the advice and feedback I need to do it better.
I appreciated the encouragement to try different techniques and times and places for writing. It was a great way to figure out what works best for me.
I learnt that I can hit my daily goal wordcount (750 words) in half an hour and seeing how much impact that can have over a month has been really powerful.
I found the way the course is offered online makes it accessible, informative and supportive. I love the wealth of resources provided, the knowledge that is shared, and the way feedback is supportably but honestly delivered to encourage writing growth. I also enjoyed reading others' work.
Pamela provided excellent feedback in an honest and supportive manner. I found this encouraging and helped my reflection on why a specific piece hadn't worked so well, inspiring me to re-work it.
I found learning the behind the scenes, deeper insights into the writing process fascinating, for example, things that other writers experience. This has helped build my confidence to keep going, especially hearing it's OK to write because I enjoy honing my craft.
Undertaking this course has lifted my confidence and helped me through some bits I was stuck on in my draft. As a result, I'm feeling excited again about picking up my work and continuing to build it.
AWC provides accessible, supportive and informative writing experiences in a fun manner. Thank you for this opportunity to emerge myself in my passion. It's truly been a delight and I'm excited about keeping it alive.
I enjoyed reading Cathie's comments and suggestions, not just for my work but for other students. If she made similar comments to me, I felt I was on the right track. When Cathie made suggestions, I made the necessary changes and it improved my writing
I really loved the audio, and will replay the modules for a 'booster' during the next few months. I enjoyed reading other people's work, irrespective of genre, and agree that workshopping their writing improved my own.
The course has given me the self-confidence that I initially lacked, and it has motivated me to continue writing, even though I am aware it may take years to reach my goal.
Do it! I have already recommended AWC to a couple of friends toying with the idea of writing a novel or memoir, and given examples of how I feel the courses have helped me.
Cathie is so detailed in her feedback, I read all of them, not just my own because there was so much to learn from the other students' work as well.
I enjoyed finding writers working in a similar or the same genre as myself. It was so comforting to know I wasn't alone on this mad journey, and reading their stories now as they too tried to find their feet with it was a huge help with me beating back my own self-doubts.
By week 3 I had hit my 20K word goal.
If writing is what you want to do, but you have no idea how to start, you need AWC.
I am trying to learn as much as possible before getting stuck into my novel and have done several Australian Writers' Centre courses online. When I saw this one I thought it would be important to find out if I was on the right path to writing a great opening and if not how I can improve on it.
Pamela presents the seminar in an interesting and engaging way. The information was relevant and made perfect sense. I liked the examples provided to back up the information Pamela was speaking about throughout the course. The openings of the books she used were really good and thought provoking.
I have many doubts about my writing - whether it is any good or too boring or unoriginal but each time I complete an Australian Writers' Centre course I become motivated to keep going. Hopefully this is my year to complete my novel.
I have two main characters in my head for my story but wonder if I can pull it off. After listening to what Pamela had to say, I think it can be done.
Definitely enrol in the Australian Writers' Centre courses. They are interesting, informative, practical and flexible. I am so glad I came across them as a result of doing the Furious Fiction competitions. Even if nothing comes of it, I am really enjoying my writing.
I've been floating the idea of writing for some time. I had no idea what area of writing I wanted to pursue. I had no confidence to start. After reading through the courses, Reinvent Yourself was the best course to resolve all the excuses and doubts. I now have the confidence to write, a routine is in place to write regularly, and I look forward to starting another course with the Australian Writers' Centre in the future.
I was concerned I was going to be paying for a quick gimmick unstructured introduction course to writing. I can happily shout from the rooftops I was wrong! From the moment I opened the course content I knew I had found a genuine course created by professionals who are passionate about their students succeeding. I have not only learned about what types of writing styles are out there, I also learned a lot of life motivational tips and tools to stop the excuses and doubts about writing.
The structured course content was easy to follow. I enjoyed all the lessons and the length of time of each session meant I could easily fit studying this course into my lifestyle. I have the confidence to write, have set up a daily writing time and dream of studying the creative writers course in the future.
If you are interested in becoming a writer I recommend the Australian Writers' Centre. Course content has an easy flow of information. The visual and audio option while doing the course means you can study regardless of any learning challenge. There's a wealth of information to stop all the excuses and start writing. There's also writing programs for kids and teens.
I loved how Pamela gave solid examples of telling and then demonstrated how to show that telling in a scene. I enjoy Pamela's approach and always learn more than I expected from attending her seminars.
As soon as I did this seminar, I went back to my manuscript and started looking at telling phrases, and worked on developing them into scenes. It also gave me comfort to know that showing and not telling is something to be tackled in the second draft rather than worrying about it in the first draft.
Book into a seminar, take a course, listen to the podcast and read the book, So You Want To Be A Writer. You'll learn more than you expected and you'll feel empowered to write. You'll heal creative wounds and take action to make your writing dreams come true.
Every course or seminar run by Pamela is GOLD. If it has Pamela's name on it, I sign up. Simple!
As always, Pamela was generous with her knowledge. She's a passionate teacher who cuts to the heart of the subject matter and communicates ideas clearly. The practical examples were so helpful and I feel excited about editing my manuscript after all that I have learned tonight.
I finally understand the 'show don't tell' concept on a deep level. I had a vague idea before, but now feel confident about what to look for in the editing process AND how to fix it. So exciting!
I've heard the advice "show don't tell" many times, but it wasn't until tonight that I really understood WHY it's so important, HOW to spot where it's missing in my writing, and most importantly, HOW to address it. Brilliant! Thank you so much. The information on filter words and phrases was also fantastic. After the seminar, I searched through my manuscript and was able to quickly identify many weak areas in my writing that I now know how to edit and improve.
AWC deliver what they promise. Oh! And if you see a course - any course! - presented by Pamela Freeman, enrol!
Thanks again for a great seminar. The information was comprehensive and has really inspired me.
Before this seminar, I felt 'show don't tell' was a buzz phrase that I would strive for. The fog has cleared and in one hour, I actually understand and have the tools to move forward.
My worksheet has so much scribbled on it. I love the quote "Put the head, heart and body of the character on the page". The explanation of showing is trusting the reader was probably the 'aha' moment.
If like me you're curious about writing, pick the brains of the professionals by enrolling in one or more of these fabulous courses on offer. I promise you, the fog will clear and your writing will shine.
I loved the practical examples that Pamela gave. Also Pamela is a good presenter - clear and informative and everything was easy to follow and understand. I feel like I now have a good handle on showing not telling. The practical examples in the handouts will help me in my writing and be useful for editing. I also loved the list of filter words - very helpful!!!
I feel like I finally understand the difference between showing and telling! Pamela explained the concepts clearly and succinctly and backed it with helpful examples that clearly illustrated the main points.
Pamela mentioned at the start that journalists often struggle with this concept. I am a journalist and I do! So the examples were exactly what I needed to learn. I also loved Pamela's concept of getting the head, heart and body on the page - this really resonated with me and is something I will keep in mind when I'm writing.
The courses are by writers for writers and you will learn something from every seminar or course - even if it's just one tiny thing - that will transform your writing.
I was attracted to this course because it was a beginner course, had exceptional reviews and also the online tutor was Victoria Purman. I love her books!
I enjoyed the assignments. It was great to submit a short piece of work practicing the skills we had just learnt and getting real timely feedback. I also loved reading other students' works. The online feedback was very timely, detailed and really provided an insight into ways of improving my writing.
I had no idea (which is why I took this beginner course) how a book was structured, the recommended do's and don'ts of writing scenes and POVs and the overall process behind writing a novel. I am now armed with so many more skills that my confidence has been boosted and I have actually commenced writing!
The Creative Writing Stage 1 course provided a concise overview of story writing with enough detail to give me the skills and confidence I needed to actually begin writing my novel. I was challenged to submit short assignments each week specifically working upon the skills taught in that weekly module and I received timely and encouraging feedback within a safe environment. All in all, it was thoroughly enjoyable too!
Lesley's lessons are clear and she breaks the process down so that it all seems very possible.
I am excited to continue to write Chapter Books. The encouragement from the feedback is invaluable.
A great course that is self-paced with fantastic audio feedback.
I like creative writing in general, and wanted to know how to make my own story for fun by knowing the basics, how to construct the plot, make a character, etc.
I found doing the assignments most enjoyable, because it was fun for me to write something in where I'd get feedback on without there being a mark.
This course helped me with how to construct a character which does impact my writing skills quite a lot within stories.
The Australian Writers' Centre is an excellent source to learn about different forms of writing and can help improve your writing skills.
I've done many courses through the Australian Writers' Centre and am aware I need an author website. Unfortunately I have no idea about going about creating one. I jumped at this course. It was also an added bonus that Michelle had created this course as I listen to her podcasts.
I learnt so much; the content and delivery were both fantastic. I feel I'm so much closer now to having my author website.
AWC courses are great. You'll learn so much and feel supported on your author journey.
My online teacher was very good and I particularly enjoyed the video format in which feedback was issued. The critique I got was very insightful and allowed me to improve on my story.
I enjoyed completing the weekly activities and receiving feedback the most.
The course has allowed me to look at my writing from a more critical perspective and taught me many things about constructing believable characters and creating an engaging story.
One major 'aha' moment in the course was when I learnt how to more expertly create a unique voice for my characters. Before, this was something I struggled with, but the course has helped me on the road to improving this skill.
I would say that the course is very extensive and helpful to teens such as myself who are just starting to find their way in the complex world of writing. It gave me a greater understanding in just about every area of storytelling.
I thought the presentation was excellent. As an older woman who has just completed a long memoir I have always found difficulty in the concept of 'show don't tell'. I feel now I can re-look at my manuscript clearly understanding what this means and how to change 'tell' into 'show'.
Thanks to Pamela for her enthusiastic and generous sharing of tips and information! As usual, her seminar was full of very helpful suggestions and examples; along with the handout for future reference. Similarly, her succinct responses to a variety of questions enabled her to cover a lot of ground!
