Dean Koorey

Dean is a copywriter, content manager and interviewer-at-large for the podcast “So you want to be a writer” by the Australian Writers' Centre. A self-confessed word nerd, Dean also researches and writes the popular Q&A columns each week – exploring the origin stories of many words and phrases.

As part of the AWC team for more than a decade, Dean is one of the brains behind the successful Furious Fiction monthly creative writing challenge. In recent years, he has become a prolific writer in short fiction – winning the New York City Midnight Micro Fiction Prize in 2024 from a field of 4000+ international writers, as well as placing in many other flash and short fiction competitions. (To cut a long story short, he’s quite good at short fiction.)

He also co-created the MOJO MONTH creative events and AWC’s online course on Real Estate Copywriting – sharing his passion for writing about everything from studio flats to country mansions with copywriters and property agents alike.

Dean was previously an art director for worldwide advertising agency Draft FCB in New Zealand. While there, he helped create many award-winning campaigns for print, radio, online, billboards and television before moving to Australia in 2005 and starting from scratch as a copywriter. He has since crafted clever words for a range of businesses large and small – often while drinking just one coffee for hours on end in the same café.
