Australian and New Zealand short story writers, this competition is for you.
The Overland Victoria University Short Story Prize for new and emerging writers is now open for the fifth consecutive year.
They are welcoming pieces no longer than 3,000 words. To qualify, you must not have published more than one book. First prize is a neat $6,000 with two runner up prizes of $1,000 each. In addition to the prize money, the three winners will also be published in the impressive Overland journal.
Want a top tip? From the media release:
As for tips on penning the prize-worthy piece, last year’s judge, award-winning writer Nam Le, suggests writers should be trying to deepen, expand and subvert common narratives. ‘Writers should be aware of the genres they’re writing into’, he said.
